Intro to Moving Water on the Grand River

Learning to run a rapid in Whitewater Class

  Our Classes:
For all Cleveland Kayak classes we provide the kayak and gear. See "What to Bring" for more details. Following our progression of classes, you will begin on quiet water and progress in difficulty.

Location of our kayak classes: Due to variation in water levels throughout the paddling season, occasionally the location for the Moving Water and Whitewater classes has to be changed. We attempt to select a location as close to the Cleveland area as possible, but sometimes (like the later part of the summer) we need to go into Pennsylvania to find rivers with sufficient water. Should a class location need to be changed we will alert you to the possibility as early as we can, and then confirm the location 48 hours prior to your class.

There is a $10 discount if you bring your own kayak and all needed gear. Please contact us to discuss whether your kayak/gear is appropriate for the intended class/tour.

NOTE: We teach our classes using white water kayaks with sprayskirts as we believe this provides the best introduction to kayaking. The skills learned here are easily applied to rec boats and sea kayaks. If you have any questions about this, please contact us.

Fundamentals of River Kayaking - Over for the Season
Whether you see yourself casually paddling down a summer stream - soaking in the nature show and the tranquility or coursing through the jaws of frothing whitewater, this is the place to begin. This one day class will introduce you to concepts that will help keep you safe years from now. Here you will learn the basic paddle strokes that are key to maneuvering any kayak; and you will learn what to do in the event your kayak capsizes. If your goal is to move onto whitewater rapid running, the importance of developing strong proper stroke technique from the beginning can’t be stressed enough.

Introduction to Moving Water - Over for the Season
This one day class introduces the concepts and techniques that every whitewater kayaker uses every time they are on the river. Here you will learn such techniques as ferrying, eddying and peelouts. You will be introduced to the all important concept of edge control and you will learn how to safely rescue yourself if you capsize in moving current. This course is the backbone to whitewater kayaking, or all you need to cruise on easy class I-II rivers.

Whitewater Kayaking - Over for the Season
This is where you put it all together to become a whitewater boater. We start with a review of Moving Water techniques and work on any areas that need attention. Then we apply these skills as you learn techniques used to run a whitewater stream. You will be introduced to the concepts of reading and following a line on the river, the basics of river rescue techniques, scouting rapids, and portaging as well as other things we feel you will need to successfully run this river.
